Hypnosis for peace with mortality
Make room for the fact of your own death, and let it sharpen this life rather than shadow it.
The aim is to look at the fact that your life ends and let that sharpen the days you have now, not shadow them.
It settles you first, then spends its time on the acceptance of this one hard truth, which is what usually takes the dread away. You do not have to believe anything in particular for it to work.
Most of the time, the end of a life is kept in a separate room in your mind. You might walk past the door occasionally, but you do not open it because what is inside seems too large to handle.
The aim here is not to change the fact that the door exists, but to stop needing to keep it shut.
What’s in it
Less dread in the small hours, and a clearer sense of what your time is actually for.
Why do it
A few quiet minutes let you look at it steadily, which is what takes away most of its power.

Timeline: Start to Finish
The middle section simply holds that fact steady. Instead of turning away, the build spends its time letting the end of life sit there without the usual rush to close it down.
3 of the 4 stages are named techniques with a published origin, credited under each.

Three ways to say it
The same goal, written three ways. You pick the one that sounds like something you would believe — and you can hear a different one tomorrow without rebuilding anything.

Future self
Meet the version of you who is at peace with being mortal.
New identity
Step into being at peace with being mortal, starting now.
Where it sits
Meaning, connection and the parts of the practice that are not about fixing anything.
Before you press play
- This one asks for a bit of care. In the app it opens with a consent step before anything plays.
- Not the right session right now if any of these are live for you: terminal diagnosis without support; recent bereavement; active suicidal ideation; acute health anxiety.
Hypnosis is not for everyone. If you have epilepsy, a psychotic illness, or you are under psychiatric care, talk to your clinician before using this — here or anywhere.
Why this works — and what the research actually says
Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.
Why do it as hypnosis?
You cannot think your way around this, because the mind creates the same pictures every time it looks. Hypnosis works by holding a subject still long enough for the edges to soften.
It does not remove the fact of mortality, but it gives you a quiet moment to look at it steadily, with nothing else demanding your attention.
What 20 years of meta-analyses actually found
Hypnosis as a whole has been studied a great deal. The strongest results are for pain and for people going through medical procedures, and the quality of the studies varies enormously. Some found large effects.
Some found nothing at all.
- 49 reviews, covering 261 separate randomised trials
- Strongest evidence: pain, and medical procedures
- Study quality is very uneven, and the authors say so
Worth knowing: The same overview rates only nine of those 49 meta-analyses as high methodological quality and 26 of them as critically low, and notes that 28 reported nothing at all about safety.
It is the best map of the field that exists, and it says the field is uneven.
The exact wording and figures
A 2024 overview pooled 49 meta-analyses covering 261 separate randomised controlled trials of hypnosis. Effects ran from d = -0.04 to d = 2.72, and just under two-thirds of the reported effects reached significance.
The strongest evidence was for people undergoing medical procedures and for pain.
An overview of reviews, which is a study of other studies rather than new patients. Useful because it is the widest honest view of where hypnosis has evidence and where it does not.
