Money & Career

Hypnosis for income anxiety

Steady in yourself when the money is not steady.

Money often feels urgent and this session is for the moments when that feeling makes it hard to think straight. It spends most of the time on the idea of a steady centre that stays still while the numbers move.

You can pick between three ways of hearing that, but the practice is always about settling yourself first.

A lot of time is spent watching the balance and waiting for it to change.

The days are used up doing sums in your head or checking the screen, and the feeling in your chest seems to be fixed to whatever the number says that morning.

It is difficult to plan for the week ahead when the ground feels like it is always shifting underneath you.

What’s in it

A calm that does not rise and fall with the balance, so you can think clearly about money instead of flinching from it.

Why do it

Fear is a poor negotiator and a worse planner, and the steadiness underneath is what lets you do either well.

Timeline: Start to Finish

The middle section rehearses the feeling of being steady while the balance stays exactly where it is. It spends its time separating the sense of yourself from the money that comes and goes.

3 of the 4 stages are named techniques with a published origin, credited under each.

  1. InductionStage 16 min

    Progressive Muscle Relaxation

A classic head-to-toe relaxation. Tense and release, or simply soften, each muscle group in sequence.

After Edmund Jacobson PMR (1929); Dave Elman Hypnotherapy · what progressive muscle relaxation is

  2. DeepenerStage 23 min

    Staircase Descent

Visualized stairs descending into a deeper level of trance. Each step takes you down.

After Ledochowski, Deep Trance Training Manual

  3. Suggestion ScriptStage 310 min

    Income Anxiety — Balanced

  4. AwakeningStage 42 min

    Calm Alert Awakening

Awake and present, but calm rather than energized. Good for evening or pre-meeting use.

    After Yapko, Trancework

Three ways to say it

The same goal, written three ways. You pick the one that sounds like something you would believe — and you can hear a different one tomorrow without rebuilding anything.

Balanced

Steady in yourself when the money is not steady. The default.

Future self

Meet the version of you who is steady in yourself whatever the month looks like.

New identity

Step into being steady in yourself whatever the month looks like, starting now.

Where it sits

Earning, spending, asking, and the story you tell yourself about both.

Before you press play

  • This one asks for a bit of care. In the app it opens with a consent step before anything plays.
  • Not the right session right now if any of these are live for you: acute financial crisis needing practical or legal advice.

Hypnosis is not for everyone. If you have epilepsy, a psychotic illness, or you are under psychiatric care, talk to your clinician before using this — here or anywhere.

Why this works — and what the research actually says

Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.

Why do it as hypnosis?

Fear makes for very poor planning, and trying to think your way out of it rarely works because the fear keeps grabbing the steering wheel.

This does something different by setting the financial pictures to one side for twenty minutes and turning your attention to the sense of steadiness itself.

The repetition trains your focus on that underlying state, not on the numbers that usually distract you.

What 20 years of meta-analyses actually found

Hypnosis as a whole has been studied a great deal. The strongest results are for pain and for people going through medical procedures, and the quality of the studies varies enormously. Some found large effects.

Some found nothing at all.

  • 49 reviews, covering 261 separate randomised trials
  • Strongest evidence: pain, and medical procedures
  • Study quality is very uneven, and the authors say so

Worth knowing: The same overview rates only nine of those 49 meta-analyses as high methodological quality and 26 of them as critically low, and notes that 28 reported nothing at all about safety.

It is the best map of the field that exists, and it says the field is uneven.

The exact wording and figures

A 2024 overview pooled 49 meta-analyses covering 261 separate randomised controlled trials of hypnosis. Effects ran from d = -0.04 to d = 2.72, and just under two-thirds of the reported effects reached significance.

The strongest evidence was for people undergoing medical procedures and for pain.

An overview of reviews, which is a study of other studies rather than new patients. Useful because it is the widest honest view of where hypnosis has evidence and where it does not.
