Hypnosis for health anxiety

Step off the checking and searching loop and let your body just be a body.

Health Anxiety is a session for the habit of searching and checking that takes over the quiet hours. It offers a way to stop scanning the body for trouble and to let the body just be a body.

The work here is practising a pause when the urge to check arrives.

A small ache in the side or a slight pressure in the head is not usually the problem. The problem is the quiet time afterwards spent checking search results and waiting for the next sensation to arrive.

The day gets divided into moments before you noticed it and moments after you decided it might be serious.

What’s in it

A quieter mind about your health and hours of your life back from checking and searching.

Why do it

A few quiet minutes break the reassurance loop, which is the part that keeps the fear alive.

Timeline: Start to Finish

This build sets aside a long block for repetition. The mechanism here is rehearsing the decision to step away from the loop, over and over, until the pattern begins to feel less automatic.

3 of the 4 stages are named techniques with a published origin, credited under each.

Three ways to say it

The same goal, written three ways. You pick the one that sounds like something you would believe — and you can hear a different one tomorrow without rebuilding anything.

Balanced

Step off the checking and searching loop and let your body just be a body. The default.

Future self

Meet the version of you who is settled about your health and free of the need to check.

New identity

Step into being settled about your health and free of the need to check, starting now.

Where it sits

A lower idle for a mind that keeps scanning for the next thing.

Before you press play

  • This one asks for a bit of care. In the app it opens with a consent step before anything plays.
  • Not the right session right now if any of these are live for you: undiagnosed symptoms you have not yet discussed with a doctor.

Hypnosis is not for everyone. If you have epilepsy, a psychotic illness, or you are under psychiatric care, talk to your clinician before using this — here or anywhere.

Why this works — and what the research actually says

Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.

Why do it as hypnosis?

The checking and searching loop is a habit of attention that settles deeper the more it is practised.

You cannot stop a habit by telling yourself to stop, but you can rehearse a different direction for the mind to take when it wanders.

This provides that rehearsal: time is spent on letting the body be a body, with no analysis and no solving of problems required.

Hypnosis and anxiety, measured

Worth knowing: The same analysis found hypnosis worked better as an addition to another psychological treatment than on its own. It is not evidence that hypnosis alone beats therapy.

The exact wording and figures

A meta-analysis of 17 trials found that at the end of treatment the average person receiving hypnosis reduced anxiety more than about 79% of control participants (weighted effect size 0.79).

At the longest follow-up, across seven trials, that rose to about 84% (effect size 0.99).

Fifteen studies and 17 trials, screened from 399 records, in the field's main peer-reviewed journal.

One trial, in numbers you can check

Worth knowing: The authors name their own weaknesses:

participants could not be blinded to which group they were in, and hypnotisability was never measured, so it is unknown whether the responders were simply the more hypnotisable people.

The exact wording and figures

In a multicentre randomised trial of group hypnosis for stress, self-rated stress after five weeks averaged 41.8 mm on a 100 mm scale in the hypnosis group against 62.9 mm in the control group - a difference of 21.2 mm (p < 0.001).

A single trial rather than a review, included because it reports a number a reader can hold on to and because its authors are unusually direct about its limits.
