Hypnosis for going through a divorce

The long middle, made survivable.

This session is for the long administrative middle of a divorce, when the loss is not over and the paperwork is not done.

It spends most of the time holding the sense of a self that is steady while the process happens around it. You can listen to get through the months of decisions without losing your ground.

A divorce is rarely a single event. It is the months of endless forms, the quiet in the kitchen where someone else used to be, and the feeling that your whole future is being decided by a solicitor you hardly see.

The days blur into each other and the exhaustion becomes the only thing that feels certain.

What’s in it

Sleep during the months of paperwork, and a self that is not being decided by the process.

Why do it

A divorce is not one loss on one day. It is a long administrative middle, and the middle is what needs holding.

Timeline: Start to Finish

The whole build focuses on the idea of the self remaining steady while the administration continues around it. The suggestion block spends time rehearsing that separation from the paperwork.

3 of the 4 stages are named techniques with a published origin, credited under each.

  1. InductionStage 16 min

    Progressive Muscle Relaxation

A classic head-to-toe relaxation. Tense and release, or simply soften, each muscle group in sequence.

After Edmund Jacobson PMR (1929); Dave Elman Hypnotherapy · what progressive muscle relaxation is

  2. DeepenerStage 23 min

    Staircase Descent

Visualized stairs descending into a deeper level of trance. Each step takes you down.

After Ledochowski, Deep Trance Training Manual

  3. Suggestion ScriptStage 310 min

Going Through a Divorce — Balanced

  4. AwakeningStage 42 min

    Calm Alert Awakening

Awake and present, but calm rather than energized. Good for evening or pre-meeting use.

    After Yapko, Trancework

Three ways to say it

The same goal, written three ways. You pick the one that sounds like something you would believe — and you can hear a different one tomorrow without rebuilding anything.

Balanced

The long middle, made survivable. The default.

Future self

Meet the version of you who is someone steady through the middle of a divorce.

New identity

Step into being someone steady through the middle of a divorce, starting now.

Where it sits

Other people: the ones you keep, the ones you lost, the ones you avoid.

Before you press play

  • This one asks for a bit of care. In the app it opens with a consent step before anything plays.

Hypnosis is not for everyone. If you have epilepsy, a psychotic illness, or you are under psychiatric care, talk to your clinician before using this — here or anywhere.

Why this works — and what the research actually says

Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.

Why do it as hypnosis?

This is not about processing the history of the marriage or figuring out who was right. The rehearsal here is entirely about the administrative middle and staying separate from it.

You sit with the idea of the paperwork and the waiting while your body is settled, practising being the person who watches the process rather than the person being dissolved by it.

What 20 years of meta-analyses actually found

Hypnosis as a whole has been studied a great deal. The strongest results are for pain and for people going through medical procedures, and the quality of the studies varies enormously. Some found large effects.

Some found nothing at all.

  • 49 reviews, covering 261 separate randomised trials
  • Strongest evidence: pain, and medical procedures
  • Study quality is very uneven, and the authors say so

Worth knowing: The same overview rates only nine of those 49 meta-analyses as high methodological quality and 26 of them as critically low, and notes that 28 reported nothing at all about safety.

It is the best map of the field that exists, and it says the field is uneven.

The exact wording and figures

A 2024 overview pooled 49 meta-analyses covering 261 separate randomised controlled trials of hypnosis. Effects ran from d = -0.04 to d = 2.72, and just under two-thirds of the reported effects reached significance.

The strongest evidence was for people undergoing medical procedures and for pain.

An overview of reviews, which is a study of other studies rather than new patients. Useful because it is the widest honest view of where hypnosis has evidence and where it does not.
